When I reached Denali National Park, I was not sure that I was going to
have a chance to explore the park. Denali receives 350,000 visitors a year, and
is open only from May 15th, to September 10th. The park
services have taken on the role as supreme protector, and have put in many
deterrents for people to visit.
The Park Service
has closed the park to car traffic, and requires you to ride a bus to where ever
you wish to go. But, as a photographer, I could not do very good work from the
window of a bus. However, I met some people who knew some people who had fairly
un-restricted access to the park. Through them I was able to get a ride all the
way out to the end of Denali.
I was out at this
location almost every day. The Mountain was always overcast. I was resigned to
think, that I was not going to get the picture that I dreamed about. On the
morning that I was to leave the park, as we approached this location for the
last time, the overcast started to break apart. Since Mt.
McKinley is so big, it makes its own weather systems. It can cloud over, or go
from total overcast to not a cloud in the sky in less than 20 minutes. And on
this morning, it did just that. I jumped out and started to click away on the
shutter. I must have exposed 3 rolls of film in a very short period of time.
The whole time, tears of joy were flowing down my cheeks.
Of all the
photographs that I did on that trip, this one is my favorite! |
