In mid July of 1997, when the salmon were on their spawning run, I took a float plane to The Katmi Bear Reserve. It is about a 2 ½ hour flight out of Homer Alaska. When you land you are in Bear Country. You are escorted to an area where you sit and have lunch. From there on, you are not to have any food items on you… Not even a candy bar. You then view a 20 minute video on how to deal with a bear if you come across one. And you do, many times. After that you are cut loose to walk around the bear reserve, escorted by park rangers, or by yourself. The most popular place is a platform that is about a mile from the main road overlooking the Brooks River. There is a water fall there, and the salmon have to jump it. That is where the bears hang out. It reminded me of a smorgasbord of salmon with running water. At these falls, there could be as many as 20 to 25 bears at one time feeding from the running salmon.
