Photo Tip of the Month

Don’t take yourself too seriously!

There’s a moment, after we’ve been out for a few months or years shooting many rolls of film, when suddenly everything seems to start coming together.  The exposures become correct.  The composition works.  The film comes back, and there are solid images with depth and balance.  You start to feel like a real photographer!  But beware: You’ve only just begun your journey—and there are pitfalls.

As we grow as people and as photographers—and if our nature leads us to improve ourselves as both, and if we happen to possess artistic ability—sometimes our heads get too big for our camera bags!

I’ve seen artists come to success, and then forget who they are and their place in this world.  They shift from creating art to creating conflict.  They take themselves far too seriously, reveling in their own self-importance and forgetting that what goes around, comes around.

I’ve been extremely fortunate in that I have a God-given talent.  I love expressing that talent, and the work is its own reward.  If God has given you a gift—whatever it may be—it would be a shame not to express that gift to its fullest.

We should take pride in our work, and in that of other artists.  Part of the reason for our success is the team of people around us.  Not only those who supply the professional services that make you look good, but your family, friends, and fans of your work.  They are your team.  They help put you where you are.

So feel free to promote yourself and your work.  But don’t forget to promote others as well.  As you learn the true art of photography, share it with others who want to learn.  Mentor, and give back to the talent pool.  Explain those very secret tricks of the trade, which we guard so closely.

Remember that, in the bigger picture, what we do as humans and as photographers is somewhat trivial.  At best, if we are any good at what we do, maybe our art will live beyond us.  So give it  your all now—while we’re here to enjoy it!
